Colorado Super League: Fall 2020 - Week 1 Recap

Commerce City, Colo. - Four games took place this past weekend as Colorado Super League kicked-off the Fall 2020 season and it was Indios Denver & Union Jerez who surprised in opening weekend.
Originally, the 2019-2020 Colorado Super League season was supposed to wrap-up in the spring. As we are all aware surrounding the current COVID-19 pandemic, that did not happen. Now, with safety guidelines and strict protocols to get back to the fields while keeping everyone safe, games resumed on Sunday.
During the time off, there was a few changes in the league compared to a year ago. Real Michoacan, Colorado Springs FC, Deportivo Chapin and Bright Stars did not come back for the second half of the 2019-2020 season. However, three new teams joined the league for Fall 2020, those teams being Arvada Strikers, CFL Aurora FC and Union Jerez. During the mid-season break, we also had two teams rebrand with new names and logos. Olimpicos FC would turn into Sunnyside Football Club and CASA FC Camargo is now competing as Club Deportivo Camargo.
In regards to opening weekend, Dick’s Sporting Goods Park complex welcomed Colorado Super League back, where Indios Denver handed league leaders Logroñes Denver SC their second defeat in league play. “Logroñes is always a difficult team to play against. They’re a team with a lot of experience and good young talent,” said Juan Martinez, Indios Head Coach. The final score was 4-1 in favor of Indios, who picked up a much needed three points and are now sitting in seventh place with 9 points. “It was a great game for us, our objective was to put a positive performance and get a positive result, and we did it,” he added. Indios recruited experience players like goalkeeper Jason Curry and midfielder Luis Perez, as well as young local talent like Eduardo Correa, Marko Babiak, Giovani De La Torre and Jackson Smink, who’s ages range from 17-20 year-olds. As for Logroñes Denver SC, they remain in first place with 19 points for now, with one game ahead of Guadalajara, who will play their first game of the Fall 2020 season next Sunday against Indios Denver.

Simultaneously on the other field, Colorado Rush II welcomed CFL Aurora FC with a 3-2 victory. With the win, Colorado Rush climbs up to fourth place in league standings with 15 points.
Following the Logroñes/Indios match, Sunnyside FC faced Club Deportivo Camargo in a close game. While CD Camargo went up 2-0 by halftime, Sunnyside FC came from behind for a 4-3 victory. “We’re very happy the boys could pull together and actually finish the chances we had been creating all first half. We felt we were the better side and deserved to win,” said Juan Carrillo, Sunnyside FC captain and one of the goal scorers. Sunnyside maintained possession of the ball for the majority of the game, with Miguel Ruiz and Jonathan Arvizu controlling the tempo in the center of the park. “I can honestly say everyone of our guys showed a lot of heart and grit, which is always good because it holds me to a higher standard with tying to match their efforts,” he added. Danny Bautista scored a brace, while Juan Carrillo and Daniel Gomez each scored one goal. With the result, Sunnyside FC moved up to sixth place and have accumulated 10 points.

On the other field, newcomers Union Jerez FC surprised GAM United FC in a thrilling match and handed the “mighty lions” their second loss of the 2019-2020 season. These two teams had faced each other in the latest US Open Cup local qualifier, with Union Jerez moving on. While GAM United tried to impose their physicality and fast-paced style of play, the game finished 3-2 in favor of Union who put away their opportunities, claiming their first points in the competition. With the loss, GAM United remains in third place of league standings with 17 points.
