Commerce City, Colo. - This weekend was one where the first six teams in league standings matched up against each other. FC Denver vs GAM United FC, Sunnyside FC vs Guadalajara and Colorado Rush II vs Logroñes Denver SC were some of the most interesting games from Sunday. CD Camargo and Union Jerez FC also showcased an action-packed game that ended in a 3-3 draw.
FC Denver vs GAM United FC was our featured Game of the Week. GAM United needed to get three points following their 3-2 defeat to Colorado Rush II. As for FC Denver, they were looking to build on their 4-1 win over CD Camargo from Week 4.
GAM United came out flying from the start. The first 15 minutes featured possession and a couple of shots against FC Denver, nothing dangerous though. GAM’s midfield was controlling the tempo, winning 50/50 balls against an FC Denver midfield that was getting beat to the ball. It wasn’t until FC Denver Head Coach, Peter Bunting, made a few adjustments. One of those adjustments was bringing in player Marko Babiak, who had an immediate impact on the game, making runs and providing a spark of energy. One of his first runs resulted in an assist to Albaraa Mutleq, who has been one of FC Denver’s most dangerous targets up front. Mutleq buried Babiak’s pass to give FC Denver the 1-0 lead at the 24th minute mark.
However, the lead didn’t last long for FC Denver. GAM United answered two minutes later with right back Arnold Ntsama Kilama scoring a goal of his own after a superb run into FC Denver territory. Ntsama Kilama initially won a 50/50 battle at midfield, connected with Zidani Baptise, who then found Solomond Appiah. Appiah then dribbled past one defender and placed the ball across the six-yard box, finding the feet of the already mentioned Arnold to level the game 1-1.
The mighty lions continued to push, searching for the lead. Solomond proved to be a headache on the left all first half. It just seemed like FC Denver couldn’t regroup themselves after GAM United’s equalizer.
Moments later at the 31st minute, GAM United took the 2-1 lead after midfielder Thomas Broeker played a perfectly weighted thru ball to striker Oluwatobi Osifodunrin, who got behind FC Denver center-back Brian Roddy and toe-poked the ball past Tyler Weber and into the back of the net. FC Denver continued to show no response in the first half.
The second half was much different. FC Denver came out with energy and pushed their lines forward looking for the equalizer. They created good looks in the run of play and off corner kicks. One of their biggest strengths has been their three center-backs that are all well over 6-feet tall, corner kicks were hard to defend for any opposition.
At the end of the full 90 minutes, GAM United FC held on to the 2-1 win for an important three points, while FC Denver dropped their first game of the season.

Following GAM United FC’s 2-1 win over FC Denver, Logroñes Denver SC and Colorado Rush II faced off in another game that had league standing complications as well.
Colorado Rush II beat Logroñes Denver SC by a score of 2-0 and is on a roll. The team led by Joe Webb remains undefeated through four games and is riding high after a crucial wins over GAM United & Logroñes Denver SC, two teams that are above Rush II in league standings. With this win, Rush II remains in 5th place, and is only 1 point below FC Denver and 3 points from league leaders Logroñes Denver SC.
As for Logroñes Denver SC, this second half of the season has been difficult. In 5 games so far, they have lost 4, technically. Yes they received the forfeit win against Indios Denver from Week 1, but this team is not playing like they were before. The concerning part here is they have lost to GAM United FC, Guadalajara & Colorado Rush II, which are in the top positions of league standings. To make things worse, they are scheduled to play FC Denver next week, another team that’s in the mix for a playoff spot.
Playoff spots may well be decided by these head-to-head matches come next month.
